A few months ago I started becoming obsessed with Wattpad. For those who haven't heard of it before, like me not too long ago, it's basically YouTube for serialized fiction. Their content runs the gauntlet from One Direction fan fiction to authors like Margaret Atwood and Cory Doctorow. Last month they announced that they raised $46M and have 25 million unique visitors every month. The New York Times wrote a great piece about them back in March that does a better job explaining it than I could.
ANYWAY, I started uploading Meta chapter-by-chapter a few months ago figuring it might help expand the number of people who get a chance to read it before the second book is ready. To say I've been overwhelmed by the response would be an understatement. Wattpad reached out to me to ask if I would be interested in them featuring it about 3 weeks ago and since then I've had more comments, messages and emails than I can keep up with. Today was the first day I hit #1 on both the Science Fiction and Fantasy charts so it seemed the right time to blog about it and celebrate a little bit.
The most amazing thing about Wattpad is that it might be the first website I've ever seen that allows comments where almost everyone is amazingly complementary and nice. Meta will be posted there chapter by chapter until all 37 are up. While the next book probably won't be going up there anytime soon since I gotta eat, I'm already planning some serialized original stuff in the Meta-universe that I think could be fun.
If you're looking to start writing, I cannot recommend Wattpad enough. It makes it very easy to start rough sketching ideas and get feedback immediately without having to take on the daunting task of finishing an entire book before anyone takes a look at it. I wish it were around years ago.
